On Saturday, September 17, over two hundred volunteers met on the banks beside Lake Bowen and prepared for a day dedicated to cleaning up our waterways.
Interact was blessed and excited to have two teams going to volunteer this year! Club members in attendance included Brooke Sanders (officer), Olivia Tate, Payal Kerai (officer), Yanet Borja, Allie Levister (officer), John Levister, Isaiah Jackson, Joanna Raines, Kayla Reizer, Miranda Long and faculty advisor Sarah Manning. The teams worked so hard this year! Covering over 3 locations along Lake Bowen, the groups put to shame our trash collection from the previous year. Last year, Interact collected over 400lbs of trash. This year once team collected 748lbs, while the other collected 810lbs. Together, Interact helped clear away over 1,500lbs of garbage littering our local water supply! Spartanburg Water reported that all in all the the whole day saw the clearing of an unbelievable "17,740 pounds of trash" (Source).
Senior Brooke Sanders told me about the reason she is motivated to volunteer. She said, "I wake up in the morning and I have to ask myself every day... is today a day I'm going to become better or stay the same?" What inspirational words from someone so young! I am so proud of all these students achieved during our first volunteer project so far. I look forward to seeping what else the Landrum High School Interact Club accomplishes during the rest of the 2016-2017 school year.
